meh you have to remember that in this game a lot of people are kinda noobs and they always like to go with offensive chars like in E3 everybody was strider, now a lot of people wanna be soldier rather than knights right now there just isn't a good enough knight to fight with another soldier to see what really happens the only good knight i know retired, so that really sux
but yeah, some people just conform to the majority

I'll have to do some reading on the differences before I make my decision, but I have a feeling I have a little while as I am concentrating on my Huna at the moment.

Knights and soldiers have different advantages. It's really easy to kite a knight, but it's not so easy to kite a soldier.

Knights with shields can survive melee onslaughts like a brick wall survives punching. Soldiers can too, but from my experience not quite as much. True it is easier to kite a knight, but the knight may not mind if you do so, he/she might just sit down and let you kite, knowing that eventually you'll have to give up or come back at him/her. I think in pvp knights may not be quite as good as soldiers, but when it comes to tanking dungeon bosses, the pdef and shield capabilities on a knight really shines.
Also, there is no such thing as a "dominant class" at pvp. If you ask an average player who would win out of a sin or bishop, you get a lot of people saying sin. Or, such was the case with a number of people in Horizen arena right before I (lvl 54 bishop with 43 poultry) beat a sin (lvl 61 sin with 53 Rpixie). Also, I surprisingly get a lot of people saying a bishop would beat a Soul Breeder. That may have been related to the fact that I had just beaten a sin, WL (50+) and archer (also 50+), but I lost to the breeder without even dealing any damage. It's all up to skill at your char and right now I personally don't have an effective method for breeders.
So as to soldier and knight, just do what you said you would do and look at skill trees and study them hard. Also watch videos and see how each char plays and pick the one you like. And of course go to the arena and watch people there. Also, record fights you see there and review them later. Watch exactly how each char uses skills and see if you can come up with better solutions to how you might use the same skill yourself.

Pet classes don't count. They're in a 'class' of their own since dual summon is the single best skill in the entire game.

XD hahahaha ummmmmmmm solders = hummers... tat army use thats bullet proof and armored .. we are mobile and we can move while needed but still not very fast. knight = tank heavy armor but slow as hell and attack slower just like a tank vs a hummer thing with like yaaaa

But I know exactly what you mean, duel summoning makes me want to punch myself sometimes. And they have pass damage on top of that. Once I get rock pin I intend to try out a new method I thought of myself, but if it doesn't work, I'm screwed.

that's a kinda bad breeder right there lol
and no offense to anybody, but i'm tired of listening to people complain about dual summon the skill itself has its own expense too you have just that much more microing to do in order to at least be DECENT
you have no idea how much i had to practice dual summon dualing before i got it down decent at least now still trying to perfect it
there's so many ways to counter dual summon but i don't wanna share it here
